JPEG: Joint Photographic Experts Group

PROS

·      Use when you have good quality pictures

CONS
 

·      Doesn’t support transparency

·      Don’t use for logos and icons

PNG: Portable Network Graphics

PROS

·      Uses lossless compression

·      Can be used for flat areas of colours, logos, transparent or semitransparent images

·       Can be used for icons

CONS

·      Try and avoid using PNG with big photos and images with details because of the big generated file size

·      In different situations it has bigger file sizes than JPG

GIF: Graphics Interchange Format

PROS

·      There are 256 colours

·      Uses lossless compression

·      Can be used for many things including logos, flat areas of colour with well defined regions and icons with not many colours

·      Support for transparency

·       And it can be used for some animations

CONS

·      The oldest format for web – 1989
 

·       In most cases it has a bigger file size than PNG 

 BMP- Bitmap

PROS

• Bitmap files may be easily created from existing pixel data stored in an array in memory.
• Pixel values may be modified individually or as large groups by altering a palette if present.
• Bitmap files may translate well to dot-format output devices such as CRTs and printers.

CONS

• They can be very large, particularly if the image contains a large number of colors. Data compression can shrink the size of pixel, but the data must be expanded before it can be used, and this can slow down the reading and rendering process considerably.

Also, the more complex a bitmap image (large number of colors and minute detail), the less efficient the compression process will be. 


 

This image illustrates the difference between bitmap and vector images. The bitmap image is composed of a fixed set of dots, while the vector image is composed of a fixed set of shapes. In the picture, scaling the bitmap reveals the dots and scaling the vector image preserves the shapes.

 

Intaglio

Etching is one of the intaglio techniques. It was first developed in the early sixteenth century, after it was discovered that acid could be used to incise an image into a metal plate. Rembrandt van Rijn, Francisco Goya, Pablo Picasso, amongst others, have used the technique to create some of their most important works.

Etching is essentially a linear medium, in which the composition is constructed by a network of lines.

How to etch:

1. 
   
   
   Apply a waxy, acid-resistant “ground” to a metal plate.
2. 
   
   
   After the ground has dried, use an etching needle to draw through the ground. The needle will scratch through and expose the metal.
3. 
   
   
   The plate is then submerged in a pan of acid. The acid will eat into the exposed lines, creating an incision. The acid-resistant ground protects the other areas.
4. 
   
   
   The plate is removed from the acid bath when the incisions are deep enough. The ground is removed with a solvent. The plate has been incised with the artist’s composition.
5. 
   
   
   The entire plate is inked. Often a dabber is used in order to push the ink into the incised lines.
6. 
   
   
   The surface of the plate is wiped clean, leaving only the incised lines filled with ink.
7. 
   
   
   The plate is placed face up on the bed of an etching press. A sheet of dampened paper is laid on top, padded with a blanket, and run through the press. Pressure forces the paper into the etched lines to pick up the ink.
8. 
   
   
   The paper is lifted away from the plate. The image has been printed in reverse. Because the paper is larger than the plate, an indentation is left by the plate’s edges; this is known as the “plate mark..”

Relief

Relief printing is a process in which ink is put onto the original surface of the matrix. Techniques include, linocut, woodcut, woodblock, metalcut, and wood engraving.

Artists that use this method include:


Katsushika Hokusai - a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printer of the ‘Edo’ period. In his time, he was Japan’s leading expert on Chinese painting. He is probably best known for his ‘wave’ picture. 

Albrecht Durer – a well known German relief artist form the Renaissance. He worked not only as an artist, but as a printer, so his prints were known as far as Europe.

STENCIL

Where the stencil forms the negative of the image or impression – including screen-printing and pochoir.

Artists that use this technique include:

Takashi Murakami – a prolific contemporary Japanese artist. His works include :

Andy Warhol -  an American print maker and a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art.

Planographic

Planographic printing is where the matrix retains its entire surface,
but some parts are treated to make the image.

Artists such as Edvard Munch who uses planographic printing to create expressionistic art. He is a Norwegian symbolist painter. Above is one of his pieces of work.

My intaglio print

I made an Intaglio print by using a scribe which was used to trace around the image as the plastic was see through. We then used this paint thing to put the paint on the plastic and the pint went into the dent's on the plastic. We then used some paper to get rid of the ink on the surface. We did this so that the intaglio wouldn't have ink everywhere. We then used this paper that we had put in water and dried, we put the plastic on the Intaglio pull machine and the wet paper on top went in to the dents on the plastic and left this intaglio image. This is what my Intaglio looks like.

Back to the future :-)

I love Back to future so much and today is the 25th anniersary of it. Hopefully on Sunday I'm going to see it at the Odeon.

Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberg and in it's first week it already had 1,000 members.
There are so many social networks for example Facebook, Bebo, Myspace, Twitter etc. The most popular of all is Facebook if Facebook was a country it would have the third biggest population taking after India and China. There are many positive and negative outcomes of social networking.
 First I'll begin with the positives.

• Allows you to connect with new and old mates.
• You can talk to people all over the world.
• It also let's your friends see recent pictures, information and an easy way to share information.

However the positives also have many negatives.

• It distractions you.
• We even lose social skills in person.
• Strangers poising as different people aka mates or celebrities.
• or even speaking to strangers.

Social networks change relationship online and offline for example we add friends but lots of the people were friends with we may have only spoke to once. Also it may put a strain on are relationships with are parents. Sometimes you add people that you probably don't even know.


We never take in all information presented to use on Internet. The world wide web has so much information even the stupidest information ever like 'why is the colour purple called purple?'. On social network site's like Facebook have a news's feeds which isn't like news stories it is just mainly useless information. Also on Facebook you can go on someones profile look at information this could be helpful if you wanted to get someone a gift and didn't know what they would like. It could also be used to look at someones contact details if you lost their number or something. All the information that is on the Internet is so much and not one person can process it all, look at imdb (Internet movie database) it has information about all the films, TV shows everything and the cast and crew.

If the web didn't exist I would know no different but if the system broke down I wouldn't be writing this and would have to buy a newspaper to see the news and use my phone more often. I think everyone wouldn't know what to do with their self. I wouldn't be able to play games well I could play board games, I wouldn't get emails I'd have to write letters etc. But maybe without the Internet would we constant more on homework or what ever were doing and be more educated.

Social networks are changing constaly for example applications, updates on are phones etc. The future of social networks I think Facebook may become old news and you'll have a new crazy a new way of communicating. Technology is constantly changing HD TVs to 3D TVs maybe one day will have a TV which  you can actually stand up and look around the Conner like we tried to do when we were little.

 Last Tuesday we made mono printing we had to roll some black paint on to a plastic thing then put it on the top of some newspaper then put a piece of paper on the top. We then drew a image on the paper for example a shell or bow etc. Once we drew the image the black paint would have left a copy of what we drew like this bow. we drew fine line with pencils straight then thick lines with the side of the pencil and then with a pen you make outlines. My image looked like this.

When we turned over the image that we drew on paper it looked like this on the over side. This is the positive print.
















I then made a negative print by using the plastic thing which already had my design on as when I drew my design/image on the paper it transferred on to the the plastic thing. i then put it on the pull press thing with a new piece of paper on. pulled the machine and the image was pressed on to the paper.

After we done this we put some ink on bubble wrap, cardboard etc. To make a good texture

Sun prints

At college we made Sun prints which was fun. First we made 4 compositions then we took the composition we liked and layed are objects out on the sun print paper. We then put it in the sun for 2 minutes and when we got them we removed are objects and it left a shadow. we brushed over them with some water and left them to dry.

This is what I made however it got messed up. It is a leave, ruler, star clip, key and paperclip.

A blog is like a diary or journal it is where you may share personal stuff, something random or what you did today. Whatever it may be could have thousands of comments from complete strangers or none like me :) but i would probably mostly write about Media as this is what it is for.

I love Perez Hilton he is amazing he was on Fearne and Perez last night it was so funny. However I don't think he is that funny to get $54,000 in one day just for advertising.

• CC means it used to stand for carbon copy but now stands for courtesy copy which means it is the second copy.
• BCC means Blind carbon copy which is when the other reciptent isn't aware of the other person.
• Subject means the title what is it about.

An RSS feed is Really Simple Syndication and is lots of web feeds like blogs, news, audio and videos.

My first blog

Hi I'm Melissa this is my first blog ever. I'm 16 and study Media at Bath College. When I'm older I would like to work at future publishing writing reviews for Film etc. I love 80's movies.

I love John Hughes movies like The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller's day off and Uncle Buck. I also like Tim Burton's movies like Sleepy Hollow . My favourite actor is Jack Black and favourite actress is Sandra Bullock. My favourite Music act is Jace Everett on True Blood and Delphic. My favourite TV shows are Supernatural, Ghost Whisperer, The Vampire Diaries,  Gossip Girl and 90210! I love Michael McIntyre Hello Wembley.

My favourite Youtube person is Shane Dawson, he is so funny, this video is of him dressed as Fresh Prince of Bel Air!
